ADMI Partners with Tafaria Castle Centre for the Arts

Tafaria Castle Centre for the Arts is excited to announce its partnership with Africa Digital Media Institute to offer rural folks training in film and music production.  This initiative is geared towards bringing these increasingly important skills closer to those in the rural areas within a 2hrs daily commute to Tafaria.

This is consistent with Tafaria’s founding vision of rural transformation and using the arts as a tool for driving the change. This partnership will make it possible for those interested in acquiring skills in music and film to access them without having to travel and reside in the cities, effectively saving on urban living costs.

Tafaria Centre for the Arts which is based at the Tafaria Castle offers full sponsored art residencies for local and international artists in all creative disciplines.

1. Film and Television Production for Beginners

Date: January 10 – February 4, 2022

Duration: 60 Hours

Cost: KSh 50,000 ( plus a KSh 2,000 KES non-refundable application fee)

Courses will be offered virtually and physically at Tafaria Conference Centre


  • Cinematography
  • Sound Recording
  • Video Editing
  • Producing and Scripting


This unit provides you with background knowledge and understanding of video cameras, location shooting or ENG, camera parts, and both outdoor and indoor shooting Film. Familiarize yourself with the roles and responsibilities of a camera operator and get a better understanding of camera operations and TV language when working with others.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Gain a better understanding of the film camera, operations, and handling
  • Apply cinematic skills in film production
  • Understand lighting for film & techniques
  • Deploy cinematic techniques under pressure
  • Create a scene breakdown

Sound Recording

Learn how to select the best sound recording equipment for a project and how to tell apart different microphones and their polar patterns. This unit will introduce you to the world of sound design.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge in sound design
  • Know the qualities of a sound designer
  • Understand the elements of sound
  • Re-produce and record sound
  • Edit sound using adobe audition

Video Editing

Learn to edit videos using Adobe Premiere Pro, the go-to program for filmmakers all over the world.  This unit will teach you the basics of the program including navigation before you proceed to more advanced features.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Navigate Premiere Pro
  • Work with files
  • Organize their media once it’s imported
  • Use the timeline for video and audio tracks
  • Create and work with keyframes
  • Add animation and other effects
  • Use the colour-correction tools

Producing and Scripting

Through this unit, you’ll be able to develop a broad range of skills integral to video production processes and techniques. You’ll also learn about film and television screenplay structure, analyze dramatic strategies in video production, learn and apply correct script form, and creatively engage in the various stages of original scriptwriting.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the video production landscape, locally and globally
  • Break down a script and produce footage as per client brief as an independent producer
  • Develop scriptwriting techniques across a range of genres
  • Analyze and edit scripts during script development
  • Gain an understanding of the business side of scriptwriting

2. Music Production for Beginners

Date: February 7 – March 4, 2022

Duration: 60 hours

Understanding Music Instruments

In this unit, participants will learn basic keyboard and guitar skills. They will work on beginner music theory, finger mechanics, rhythm, chords and building their ears to excel in music.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the learner will be able to:

  • Accompany simple songs on a keyboard/piano
  • Play major, minor and 7th chords
  • Execute basic chord progressions in song contexts
  • Accompany simple songs on a guitar
  • Play major and minor open chords on a guitar
  • Execute basic strumming and fingerpicking techniques in a progression

Introduction to Mixing & Mastering

Explore the many creative and technical considerations necessary to mix in today’s music production environment, regardless of platform or format.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Describe the different mixing processes in detail
  • Describe the basic tools and techniques used during mixing
  • Demonstrate the ability to mix simple music sessions
  • Give an overview of the psychological aspects of mixing music
  • Describe psychoacoustic mechanisms

Introduction to Composition & Recording

Get equipped with the skills and knowledge to arrange your music into award-winning songs.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Gain skills in writing lyrics whilst integrating key elements of songwriting: structure, melody, harmony and arrangement
  • Understand the qualities of an outstanding chorus, its development, execution and/or application
  • Compose an outstanding chorus utilizing simple chord progression, unique melody and captivating lyrics

Introduction to Music Production Software (Logic & Ableton)

Discover what goes on behind the scenes of producing a record and learn how to create, manage, direct an industry-standard record in a home studio setting. Explore the production process from beat making to vocal recording in different genres.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Craft a commercially outstanding record
  • Create commercial beats
  • Craft a commercially outstanding mix and master

How to get to Tafaria Castle 

Turn off at the Tafaria signage off Nyeri/Nyahururu road and drive 3kms to Tafaria. If using public means, there are regular boda-bodas that operate between Tafaria and the main road.


The fees do not include meals. You can either buy food at the Castle’s restaurant or carry your own (a dedicated eating space for this is provided)
