ADMI at 10 Party – Inside Our Wakanda Themed Celebration

The ADMI at 10 Party was nothing short of memorable. After a decade of training and mentoring African creatives in creative media and technology, the institute culminated its 10 years of existence in Wakanda themed pomp and grandeur on Friday, the 20th of October 2022.

ADMI began in 2011 as JFTA to empower young filmmakers in Kenya, with only five students enrolled at its inception. In 2013, JFTA gained an excellent reputation in the film industry and built successful partnerships with various organizations. Three years later, JFTA changed to ADMI and moved from the original campus at Shalom House to a state-of-the-art campus in the CBD.

At this campus, ADMI offers students industry-standard software and equipment as well as studios for them to develop their practical technical skills. Today, ADMI celebrates having trained over 3,000 creatives, successfully graduated nearly 1000, and is home to students from over 27 countries.

After a decade of growth and success, there was no better way to celebrate than to bring together the ADMI community in its entirety; students, alumni, faculty, staff and parents to its humble beginnings at Shalom House.

From hair to makeup, wardrobe and accessories, ADMI at 10 party guests came accoutered in their Wakanda-inspired ensembles, hoping to win the Best Dressed Award.

ADMI at 10 Party – An Afrofuturist Affair

Nothing says ‘Afro-futuristic’ like a modern take on African wax print. Although this beautiful fabric originated in Europe, it has been widely adopted in Africa since the 19th century. At first, Ankara was worn during cultural celebrations and later cast aside in favour of western clothing as Africa embraced modernity in the 20th Century. Today, Africans are reclaiming Ankara, Kente, Shweshwe, Kikoy, Leteisi, Khanga, and Shema on the streets and runways all over the world.

Creatives the world over are infusing elements of Africa’s rich culture in fashion, music and other forms of art. Similarly, guests at the ADMI at 10 party borrowed elements of Africa’s past into their outfits – from intricate designs to vibrant colours and stunning accessories to celebrate Africa’s cultural diversity through dress.

Electrifying Performances at the ADMI at 10 Party

ADMI’s biggest acts kept everyone on their feet from morning to dusk with chilling performances. Prudence Mukoya, Mercy Jeddy, Yakkuza Band, DJ Cedric Ogola, DJ Zavon and DJ Tush Mutuma were flanked by the ADMI band and dancers and kept guests thoroughly entertained.

MCs With The Most

An MC can make or break an event. Our music production faculty,  MC Gabu and film & tv production student Jerry Mokua brought the house down and kept guests engaged from start to finish.

Wakanda Forever

What started as a war cry and salutation in the Marvel films Infinity War and Black Panther is now a universal symbol of pride, unity and longevity representing black excellence. Wakanda has become part of global culture and is embraced as a dynamic blueprint of Afrofuturism. It was a great honor for ADMI to be associated with the Wakanda movement during the ADMI party.

A Toast to the Last Decade

Someone once said, ” A party without cake is just a meeting”, so best believe there was plenty of cake at ADMI’s 10th-anniversary party.

ADMI’s Board Chair Dr Laila Macharia, Founding Director Wilfred Kiumi, Principal Kevin Ogutu and alumni representatives Thok Thor and Linda Wairegi gave their speeches before the cake-cutting and the champagne toast.

Awarding The Best Dressed

As the event drew to a close, the 10 nominees for the Best Dressed Award took to the stage. This proved to be a tight-raced competition because each of them was dressed to the nines.

After a terrific day of food, music, fun, dance and cake, the ADMI band wrapped up the event with some musical sets as the guests left at their own pleasure. The ADMI at 10 celebration was brilliantly executed by Mr Chris Kirwa and his team from Cate and Chris Limited who tirelessly worked with the ADMI team.
